Reading/Language Arts groups are on grade level for all students with the opportunity for Enrichment and Reinforcement.

In grades 1 - 4, students in need of extra support in Math and Reading/Language Arts are instructed by resource teachers in the LEAP Program. The LEAP Program offers both Resource and Enrichment opportunities for students in grades 1 - 8.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten emphasizes teaching children a love of learning through developmentally appropriate hands-on activities for growing socially, academically, spiritually and physically. The program consists of the following: religion, language arts, math, science, social studies, Spanish, computer, library, music, physical education and art. The language arts program is phonics-based with a strong emphasis on literature. Manipulatives and cooperative learning groups are used daily in math, social studies, science, and art classes. Religion lessons are integrated daily as we stress sharing and kindness to one another in all that we do.

Primary Grades 1 and 2

Grades one and two are self-contained classrooms with one teacher and one teaching assistant per class. Resource classes are available for reading and math.

The language arts program consists of grammar, reading, spelling, and penmanship. The reading curriculum utilizes the McGraw-Hill Treasures series with emphasis on phonics and comprehension. Creative writing is an important part of the program.

The math curriculum emphasizes an understanding of concepts, computation and problem solving. Math manipulative materials are used to enhance skills.

Social studies and science are taught as an awareness of the world. Periodicals, manipulative materials and experimentation are used to enrich these subject areas.

Spanish is taught twice each week. Library, art, music, physical education, and computer classes are held weekly.

Religion is taught and modeled daily. Prayer is an integral part of the day. The primary grades participate in Liturgical celebrations as planners and participants.

Intermediate Grades 3, 4, and 5

At Resurrection-St. Paul School the intermediate department consists of the third, fourth, and fifth grades. The language arts curriculum includes reading, grammar, writing, penmanship, spelling, and library skills. Reading is taught in flexible groupings using the Treasures series by McGraw-Hill publishers with an emphasis on skill building. The English curriculum emphasizes the use of grammar and spelling in the writing process.

The mathematics curriculum focuses on the development of new concepts, mastery of computational skills and problem solving through daily drills and practice. To address the individual academic needs of our students, math is taught in small groups.

The areas of science and social studies are developed through discussion, hands-on activities, demonstrations, experiments and use of up-to-date textbooks.

Spanish is taught twice weekly. Library, art, music, physical education, and computer classes meet weekly.

At these grade levels the religion curriculum emphasizes the Mass, the Beatitudes, the Ten Commandments, and the Sacraments of our Church. The intermediate grades join with the entire school in Liturgy and para-Liturgy celebrations. They also help to prepare these liturgies throughout the year.

Middle School Grades, 6, 7, and 8

The middle school, composed of grades six, seven and eight, is departmentalized by subjects. Cross-curricular approaches are utilized when appropriate.

Middle school language arts includes a literature based reading program. Different types of prose and poetry are studied in order to develop understanding of and appreciation for literature. Communications skills evolve through diverse writing and speaking activities. The program incorporates vocabulary, spelling, public speaking and grammar into individual and group situations.

The social studies curriculum is composed of world history, U.S. history and U.S. government. The sixth grade studies ancient history and geography. Seventh and eighth grades study U.S. history, geography, and civics. Historical facts and their relevance to current events are explored. Text materials, maps, periodicals and manipulative materials are utilized.

Science at the middle school level is taught using a combination of lecture, labs, cooperative learning activities and individual projects. The sixth grade curriculum combines life, earth, and physical sciences. Grade seven curriculum consists of life science. Earth science is the focus of the eighth grade curriculum.

Instruction in middle school math ensures that all students will have experience with algebra by eighth grade. The Glencoe Math series sequentially builds necessary pre-algebra skills. Emphasis is placed on computational skills, concepts and problem solving using a variety of teaching strategies and materials.

Spanish is taught twice weekly. Cultural perception is the focus of the curriculum. Reading, writing and grammar skills are developed while expanding comprehension and conversational skills learned in lower school.

Religion incorporates classroom study, liturgies and prayer services, reception of sacraments and outreach programs. The middle school curriculum integrates the study of the history of the church, the life and teachings of Jesus and Bible study. Religion is taught not merely as a subject, but as a way of life.
