What do I need to know about the first week of school?

Transportation

Arrival:

The first day of school this year is Monday, August 25th. Students arriving to school, either by bus or by car, will be met by school personnel and parent volunteers upon arrival. In order to have the children's first day run as smoothly as possible we are asking that parents refrain from walking their child/ren into school or meeting them at school when their bus arrives. Every effort will be made by the faculty and staff to insure a smooth transition for our students from home to school. The school must maintain a secure and safe environment and therefore cannot have unauthorized visits from parents on this day.

Bus Riders:

Buses will be available to transport students to school on Monday, August 25th. We will dismiss at 12:30. We will not have bus transportation home from school on August 25th. All students must be picked up on the first day of school. Busing is available to and from school beginning on August 26th.

Bus Routes:

The school bus routes are provided from the Howard County Board of Education. According to Howard County Policy, only the morning pick up times will be listed next to the bus stop location. The bus stop locations remain the same for student drop off. Afternoon drop off times will only be posted at the school. Please check the school exterior doors for your child's drop off time.

Car Riders:

Students who are transported to school by car should be dropped off no earlier than 8:45 AM and no later than 9:00 AM. Students are dropped off at the back entrance of the school in the area between the school gymnasium and cafeteria. Please pull your car up parallel to the building and remain in the car line until your child(ren) can safely exit the car. Students will be met by parent volunteers and school staff who will supervise the children's entrance into the building. Students sit by homeroom in the cafeteria until they are led up to their classroom.

School Lunches

The children will need to bring a packed lunch and beverage from home each day of the first week of school. The Hot Lunch and Milk Programs will not begin until the following week. Please do not send glass containers. Please mark lunch boxes and bags with your child's full name and homeroom. The Hot Lunch Program will not be available for forgotten lunches.

In the event that your child has forgotten their lunch they are allowed to call home for it. If you realize that your children has left their lunch in the car or at home please call the school office so that we may let your child know that a lunch is coming.

When the Hot Lunch Program is in session and under special circumstances if it is not possible for your child to have a forgotten lunch brought to school, the school will provide the child a lunch through the Hot Lunch Program. The parent will be billed accordingly.

On days when the school has an early dismissal of 12:30PM there is no lunch period.

School Uniform

On the first day of school students should arrive at school attired in the official school uniform. Either the summer or winter uniform is acceptable. Please remember to wear a black or brown belt with the summer uniform shorts and school pants. Please be mindful that no fad hairstyles are allowed and shirts must be tucked in. Please refer to the school handbook for school uniform details. The final say in appropriate school attire and appearance lies with the school principal's interpretation of the school handbook and supersedes the parent or student interpretation of the school handbook. The homeroom teachers will notify their class of their physical education schedule. The children should wear their gym clothes to school on their physical education class days.

The School Handbook

The Resurrection-St. Paul school handbook will be sent home, one per family, as soon as it is received from the printer. Many of your parental questions will be answered within the contents of the handbook, but please never hesitate to call the school office for clarification.

Is your family new to RSPS or will you have another child joining us next year?

Every year before school starts, RSPS has a New Family and New Student Welcome event. Your attendance at this evening will provide your family, and most importantly your child, an opportunity to become familiar with their homeroom classroom and other room locations through a tour of the entire school. You and your child will also hear about basic policies and procedures, meet some current students, families and staff members and have time provided to ask any questions that may remain.

Where can I buy a school uniform?

All students in grades K through 8 are required to be in the official full school uniform each school day. The school uniform supplier is Flynn and O'Hara. The school uniform may be obtained by visiting their store, placing an order by phone, or on their website. No substitutions may be made on the main articles of clothing. Socks, shoes and belts are the only items that may be purchased independent of Flynn and O'Hara. Please refer to the School Uniform section of the Parent-Student Handbook for complete details of the school uniform and dress code.

Can we handle children with learning differences and other special needs?

Resurrection-St. Paul School is able to accommodate many students with diagnosed physical and/or learning differences. With the support of a large resource staff, we are able to create programs necessary to allow most students to access the curriculum.

Each student's needs are different and a pre-admittance conference is recommended with members of the administrative team to determine, on a case-by-case basis, whether or not Resurrection-St. Paul School can provide the best learning environment for the student.

Where do our families reside?

Many students reside in the surrounding Ellicott City and Columbia area. However, several students commute from Eldersburg, Sykesville, Mount Airy, Catonsville, and Woodlawn.

How do we incorporate technology into our curriculum?

In attempting to meet the educational needs of the 21st century student, Resurrection-St. Paul School is committed to integrating technology into all areas of the curriculum. The school is proud to have the following technology throughout the school:
  • LCD projectors in all classrooms
  • A modern computer lab with 32 state of the art PC's
  • A mobile laptop cart with wi-fi internet access
  • Document cameras
  • Digital still and video cameras
  • SMART boards in several classrooms
  • All teachers are required to integrate the use of technology in their weekly lessons.

How often do we attend Mass?

Resurrection-St. Paul School attends Mass on a bi-monthly basis as an entire school community. Numerous prayer services and retreat experiences are held for students during the year celebrating the liturgical seasons. Additionally, in an effort to help students learn to be silent to listen to the word of God, all students are given the opportunity to participate in Eucharistic Adoration as a class every 3 weeks. To encourage active student participation in services, each Mass and prayer service are prepared by students on a rotating class basis.
